Talk about highs & lows.
Russell Wilson has experienced the elation of being a Rose Bowl Champion quaterback, followed by a storybook romance in January 2012 when Russell marries his longtime girlfriend & high-school sweetheart, Ashton. Then to be drafted by the Seahawks in the third round & followed by a rookie year that seemed so promising after beating out Matt Flynn & Tavaris Jackson for the starting QB role. That, as we know ended with a last-second field goal vs the Falcons to fall just short of their shot at an NFC title. All seemed well and perfect in his life otherwhise, though. Fast forward to 2014 when the football gods dropped the world’s biggest, sweetest, most incredible 12th Man-flavored cherry on top of an improbable season: the Seattle Seahawks were Super Bowl Champions for the first time, and Russell hoisted yet another trophy.
Everyone was in love with this 5’10 young kid who – seemingly out of nowhere – was the leader that Seattle needed. Charitable, charming, and now: the Champ. Unfortunately, not everything is so perfect behind the velvet curtain, as witnessed today when the Russell released a statement via the Seahawks that he and Ashton would be divorcing & asking for prayers & privacy. But some are speculating that this might not be the end of the story…
“I have made the difficult decision to file for divorce.” Clearly, decisions like these don’t come easy. Ashton and I respectfully ask for prayers, understanding and privacy during this difficult time. Moving forward, I will have no further comment on this personal matter.”
A lot of those media outlets are publicly questioning a team release informing the media of a star player’s divorce.
“Given Wilson’s popularity, word would have eventually gotten out, via the avenues that pursue celebrity relationships,” profootballtalk.nbcsports.com reported. “Announcing it via the team seems an unusual step, since many other players get divorced every year.”
From Deadspin.com, “So this is … weird. Not the divorce, obviously, but the fact that the news was broken by the team. Which leads us to think Wilson’s hoping to get out in front of something. Know more? Email us.”
Say it ain’t so, Russ. #InRussWeTrust
