The Friday Five (6.6.14)

Welcome to The Friday Five y’all! A new weekly blog post by yours truly (Lydia) featuring five purely joyous dance tracks to start your weekend off right. It’s 5pm somewhere right? And that somewhere has glow sticks if I have anything to say about it. I even know how to dance party indoors, while sitting down. See above.

I started the Friday Five because of my pure love for music. Cassettes and CDs (those old person things) were my unpaid babysitters growing up. Since I had little to no musical talent of my own, I just decided to learn EVERYTHING about it. Now I have a brain chalk full of songs, albums, lyrics and useless trivia to show for it. My boyfriend finds it very attractive when I give a track by track breakdown of a minimally circulated album from 1986. #StraightRomance #HeHatesIt

While I love everything from The Rolling Stones to Otis Redding, I’m a sucker for music that makes me move. Pretty amazing I get to work for this radio station right? I’ve been a dancer since I could stand on two legs and allergic to sitting still even before that. I love dance music because it makes people FEEL GOOD. There’s a reason dance festivals can draw 150,000 people from all walks of life together. There’s a dancer in all of us… even if he/she is just a two stepper, head bobber, or side to side swayer. All skill levels are accepted here.

My goal for The Friday Five is to give you a sample of the best new dance/feel good tracks out there heading into your weekend. They might be from well-known artists, or musicians just on the verge. I’d also love to hear from YOU about what tracks make you move, dance party, cartwheel, etc. You can e-mail me anytime at or even Tweet me your picks at @TheLydiaCruz.

Now let’s break your inner dancer out, at least for a quick appearance. Here are your inaugural Friday Five…

1) Sam Smith – Stay With Me (Rainer + Grimm Remix)

He may only be 22, but British singer Sam Smith already has an impressive resume and several accolades under his belt. He rose to fame as the voice on Disclosure’s “Latch” as well as Naughty Boy’s “La La La,” the latter video having over 200 million views on YouTube. Now it’s Sam’s turn in the spotlight when his debut album drops in the US on June 17th.

Listen For: Incredible vocals and the perfect weekend warm-up song, plus a FREE download from their SoundCloud

2) Foxes – Holding on to Heaven (The Chainsmokers Remix)

You know Foxes from Zedd’s Grammy-winning song “Clarity,” but I predict this gorgeous songstress will be a star in her own right in NO time. Hailing from England, the singer known as Louisa Rose Allen to her friends is already a breakout sensation abroad. Lookout for her debut album “Glorious” to be released in the US soon.

Listen For: A sugar-sweet melody in danger of inducing diabetes and a pulse-pounding chorus thanks to “Selfie” creators The Chainsmokers

3) Rudimental ft. Emeli Sande – Free (Cash Cash Remix)

British quartet Rudimental makes everything from electronica to soul music. Their debut album “Home” is filled with inspirational lyrics, famous collaborations, and pure dance tracks. I was lucky enough to catch their live show recently, where they’ve been known to bring as many as 20 musicians on stage to give the crowd a completely unique experience.

Listen For: Three amazing artists on one track and a beat drop that is worth every second of it’s 1:30 build

4) Disclosure ft. Sam Smith – Latch

Disclosure is an electronic duo made up of fresh-faced brothers Howard and Guy. Their debut album “Settle” was nominated for a Best Album Grammy earlier this year and they’ve been touring around the world ever since. Did I mention they’re only 20 and 23?

Listen For: Sam Smith’s gorgeous voice and an infectious chorus that I order you to turn UP

5) Chromeo – Jealous (Dillon Francis Remix)

Yet another import makes an appearance on the Friday Five, this time hailing from our neighbors up north. Canadian duo Chromeo formed back in 2002, when two childhood friends and former hip-hop producers started to make music together. The result is a blend of hilarious electro-funk that is difficult not to love. Earlier this year they sold out The Showbox in Seattle so quickly that a second show was added.

Listen For: Hilarious lyrics and infectious beat additions by Dillon Francis

Thanks for listening! Let me know what you think via e-mail, Facebook, or Twitter. I’d love to hear what you’re shamelessly dance partying to. See you in a week for another Friday Five. Now go dance party like me. Minus the snow.

Stay safe and have an amazing weekend in the sun!
